Euro 2012 final Italy vs Spain Strengths and weaknesses

Euro 2012 final: Strengths and weaknesses

Total Football analyses the strengths and weaknesses of both teams in the lead up to the final of Euro 2012.

SPAIN

Strengths:

Fernando Torres with footballSpain have so many strengths but the most obvious one is their ability to completely control matches with their possession-based passing game.
Over the course of the tournament they have the highest average possession of any team at 67%, as well as the highest pass accuracy at 88%.
It is seen primarily as an offensive tactic but it’s an efficient defensive one too; they haven’t conceded in 419 minutes – since Di Natale gave Italy the lead in Gdansk on June 10. Di Natale’s goal is also the only one they’ve conceded in the finals.
In fact, for a team with such attacking wealth, Spain’s defence has probably seen them through to the final.
Iniesta (pictured) will be a key figure in this game. He, out of all the Spanish players, is given the most freedom.
Iniesta's importance
Andrés Iniesta Luján is a Spanish football playerHe starts in a left forward position but will probably drift more centrally in order to help create a 4 v 4 in midfield. He will also look to combine with Alba who will be available on the overlap.
Spain coach, Vicente del Bosque also has the element of surprise on his side - no one is sure who will play up front. It is likely to be either Fabregas or Torres after Negredo’s poor display against Portugal.
But Chiellini et al won’t know for sure until an hour or so before kick off and that may unsettle their preparation. Who knows, maybe del Bosque will surprise us all and play Llorente.
Overall, though, Spain’s wonderful cohesion, commitment to a playing philosophy and consistent squad selection gives them a fluidity rarely seen at international level and an important advantage.
This is, of course, in no small part down to the fact that there are six Real Madrid players and seven Barcelona players (not including Alba who has just signed for the Catalans) in the 23-man squad.

Weaknesses:

It seems folly, but it’s possible Spain’s only weakness is that del Bosque has too much attacking talent and he isn’t sure which one best serves his team.
Spain football team 2012Fabregas and Torres had played two games each in the lead up to the semi-final, one as a 'false nine' and one as a traditional number nine, suggesting that del Bosque simply chose his forward depending on whether the opposition would play a deep line or a high line.
But then, in the semi-final he gave Negredo a start, having played just one minute in the tournament previously.
It is possible this is still the case and Negredo was seen as a like-for-like replacement for Torres, who despite having scored two goals, still looks out of sorts. He has been caught offside six times, the most in the tournament so far.
It could be a cause of unrest for the squad, having to alter the way they play so often. As mentioned before, it also suggests that Del Bosque isn’t sure of the right way to play, which could filter down to the players, potentially undermining him.

ITALY

Strengths:

It will be a fascinating tactical battle in the middle of the pitch on Sunday.
mario balotelliAlthough Prandelli played Italy in a 3-5-2 formation when they met Spain in the opening game of the group stages, it is thought he will stick with the midfield diamond that provides them with an extra midfielder.
It is within the midfield diamond that Italy are strongest. It is a midfield that goes against relative convention. Pirlo, Italy’s most creative player and the star of the tournament, sits at the base of the diamond – a place usually reserved for a defensive player.
Montolivo will most likely be picked ahead of Nocerino and Motta at the top of the diamond. He was excellent against Germany and rather than creating chances for the strikers (he can, of course, do this too) his primary responsibility will be to harry the deepest Spanish player (Busquets or Xabi Alonso) in an effort to disturb Spain’s passing rhythm.
De Rossi and Marchisio shuttle along either side of Pirlo and Montolivo and provide support both in attack and defence.
The midfield diamond and the sparkling Pirlo
But what makes this midfield so dangerous is that they are all so comfortable in possession and can rotate position at will. So if Xavi starts pressing too much on Pirlo, he can move further forward into space and allow De Rossi to drop in deep.
PirloUnusually for Spain, they will be outnumbered in the midfield and whoever dominates this battle will have a huge advantage in the game.
Cassano and Balotelli, are good friends off the pitch and they have developed a close understanding on the pitch in this tournament. They both look to run the channels and stretch the opposition's central defence.
Indeed, this worked perfectly against Germany, Cassano picked the ball up in the left channel, pulling Hummels out of position, and crossed for Balotelli to score. For this reason Spain full backs, Arbeloa and Alba will have to be weary about the space they leave when they move forward.

Weaknesses:

Italy’s narrowness in the central midfield causes a weakness on the wide areas. The full backs have no protection and for that reason they are vulnerable.
EURO 2012 Italy National Football TeamJordi Alba has arguably been one of Spain’s best players in the tournament and he could cause a lot of damage with Iniesta on the left hand side by doubling up on Abate, who isn’t particularly strong defensively.
To compensate for this Prandelli will look for his midfield to move laterally as a unit, depending on which side the ball is on. However, Spain are a team full of excellent passers and they could quickly switch the play and exploit the space the Italian midfield vacates.
Torress caused the Italians all sorts of problems when he came on in their group game. If he starts, he will look to run in behind the Italian central defence in an effort to exploit their relative lack of pace.

England vs Italy

Wayne-Rooney-EnglandDid you know that  there as never been an England – Italy match up at a top-level meet such as the UEFA or FIFA finals since the origins of modern football which dates back to the second half 19th century – at senior level squad? Surprising isn’t it?

Come Sunday evening , there will be a historical match-up when England take on Italy in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.  Both Teams play styles opposite to what they are accustomed to.  England under Roy Hodgeson’s  have been tight in defence and in offense, disciplined, rarely straying forward without ample cover.  Ceasare Prandelli’s Italy in contrast, have lit up the tournament with their free-flowing football. The fact that Michael Platini the magician himself described their play as beautiful is an accolade in itself!

Mario Balotelli
Italy have played with three centre backs and two very adventurous wing backs giving them great width and allowing a well protected Pirlo to pull the strings in midfield.  This style of play is likely to pin back England’s wide players stilling their already limited attacks and I feel ultimately tipping the tie in the Italians favour.

Then there is the enigma that is Mario Balotelli, who has had a poor tournament with a well taken volley in their last group game being his main contribution. Italy look much more cohesive without him, Cassano and Di Natale forging a good relationship with each other.  England must be hoping that Balotelli does start in Sunday’s game and prove the weak link in the Azzuri attack.

England unconvincingly topped the Group D, but the spectacular return of Rooney in their last league game will fill them with more bluster and confidence when they take on Italy in the last quarterfinal game of Euro 2012. England against Italy feels as though it should be one of football’s classic fixtures, a meeting between the motherland of the game and a country that has won the World Cup four times.

EURO 2012 Spain vs. France

Fernando TorresKarim Benzamen

It's Spain versus France for a place in the European Championship semifinal on Saturday. It's the biggest and most anticipated match of the tournament so far. Here you'll find the best of Saturday's action and pre-match buildup.
All times are Polish.
1600: Spain has never beaten France in six competitive matches, but they're confident of victory tonight. "Football offers up something nice, which is you always get a chance at revenge and tomorrow night we get that chance," says Sergio Ramos, who played in a 3-1 second-round loss to Les Bleus at the Germany World Cup. "In 2006, we didn't possess the maturity or the experience that we have now. We were in the midst of being formed into a team, with a lot of new players." Since that result, Spain has gone on to hone the quick-touch, possession-based game that led the country to Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup triumphs.

Germany vs Greece - UEFA EURO CUP 2012

Germany and Greece FansGDANSK (Reuters) - Germany are planning to bide their time and eventually wear down defensive-minded Greece when they meet in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals on Friday.
The Germans advanced through Group B with three wins from three games but are bracing for a much tougher defence than what they faced against Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark.
Greece conceded only five goals in 10 qualifiers, though they also let in three goals in three Group A games, advancing as runners-up behind the Czech Republic.
"We got a small taste of what we can expect when we faced the Danes," said Germany holding midfielder Sami Khedira of their 2-1 victory on Sunday.
"Greece are a very compact team, tactically very strong, well organised and aggressive. They are also fast on the breaks and if you see that they had three or four chances in the tournament so far and scored three goals you can tell they are masters of efficiency.
SamarasGomez"So patience will be necessary from our side. We have to move because if we remain static it will be very difficult against them. We have to wear them out, tire them out and keep moving."
Germany have yet to find the form that took them to third place in the World Cup two years ago but they have shown they have matured into a team who may lack spark but can be equally effective when it comes to winning games.
"We are calmer now, more clever and we keep our composure for longer," said Khedira when asked to compare this team with that of two years ago. "We are more concentrated over 90 minutes," he said.
BOATENG BACK
The Germans, who will have defender Jerome Boateng back after missing the last game through suspension, will meet either England or Italy in the last four should they advance against the seemingly weaker Greeks.
Asked whether he was happy to have avoided a potential match-up with world and European champions Spain in the semi-finals if they beat Greece, Khedira refused to speculate.
"Our focus is only on Greece because you know surprises happen in football."
Greece Football Team
German Football TeamGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel, a fervent supporter of the team, will be hoping there are none as she attends the game but her presence could trigger the ire of Greek fans, angered by Berlin's backing of an austerity plan for the debt-ridden nation.
Both teams have played down the political connotations of the game and Greece will be looking to cause an upset only on the pitch, even without suspended captain Giorgos Karagounis.
Greece coach Fernando Santos has yet to reveal who will replace the inspirational midfielder but it is likely to be Grigoris Makos, a more defensive player, who will try to break up German attacks early.
"There is an atmosphere of self-sacrifice in this team," said midfielder Kostas Katsouranis. "All 11 players will give it all we have got. We have been successful as a team where each one player plays for the team, and that is what we will do again."

Katy Perry - Wide Awake

Katy Perry
Katy Perry
Wide Awake

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
I'm wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong

I'm wide awake
And now it's clear to me
That everything you see
Ain't always what it seems
I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
Till I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud 9
Crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight
(Yeah I'm) Falling from cloud 9

I'm wide awake
Not losing any sleep
Picked up every piece
And landed on my feet
I'm wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself - nooohooo

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I am born again
Outta the lion's den
I don't have to pretend
And it's too late
The story's over now, the end

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
Till I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud 9
Crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting go)
I'm Falling from cloud 9

Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling
I am trying to hold on
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side
But I'm not blind anymore...
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

[Chorus]
Yeah, I'm Falling from cloud 9
Crashing from the high
You know I'm letting go tonight
I'm Falling from cloud 9

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

Super Star Angelina Jolie

After the joy of welcoming her third child to the world came great sadness for Jolie. She experienced a great personal loss in the beginning of 2007 - her mother died of cancer after fighting the disease for many years.

Another great dramatic role in Girl, Interrrupted (1999) brought Jolie her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has continued to take on a variety of interesting roles, such as an adventurer in the Lara Croft films, a FBI profiler in Taking Lives(2004), an assassin in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005), and a neglected, troubled socialite wife in The Good Shepherd (2006).

After the joy of welcoming her third child to the world came great sadness for Jolie. She experienced a great personal loss in the beginning of 2007 - her mother died of cancer after fighting the disease for many years.

Angelina Jolie Voight was born in Los Angeles, California. Her father Jon Voight was an established Hollywood actor, who had earned worldwide fame for his performances in 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Deliverance' and 'Coming Home' - the latter winning him an Oscar.
Angelina’s mother was the part-Iroquois, part-French actress and model Marcheline Bertrand, who now, incidentally, works as Angelina’s manager. Angelina’s parents split up before she was two-years-old, and her mother moved back to the East Coast with Angelina and her brother James, where they lived in the Palisades, in the state of New York.
Despite her parents’ divorce, Angelina remembers her childhood as being a happy one. She was a huge 'Star Trek' fan, and showed her unusual tastes even at an early age, by having a crush on Mr Spock! Her taste in pets was highly original too, and she collected snakes and lizards. Her favourite snake was called Harry Dean Stanton, and her favourite lizard was called Vladimir.
At school, she joined a gang called the Kissy Girls, who hunted boys down and kissed them until they begged for mercy - until the school called a halt and the gang broke up! Money was tight whilst Angelina was growing up, but Marcheline made a point of taking her children to the movies as often as possible. Angelina claims that these family movie outings were what first inspired her to dream of becoming an actress.
When Angelina was 11, the family moved back to Los Angeles. Angelina decided to get serious about her dream of becoming an actress and enrolled for acting lessons at the prestigious drama academy, the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. But she didn’t enjoy her years at Beverly Hills High School, where she was constantly teased for wearing glasses and braces and for being so skinny. She also tried to get work as a model, but was turned down for being too short, too thin and too scarred.

The teasing and rejection she experienced during her early teenage years had a disastrous effect on her sense of self-esteem, and at the age of 14, she dropped out of high school. She dyed her hair purple, moved in with her punk rocker boyfriend, adopted a Gothic dress code of black, black and more black - but more seriously, began to self-harm and cut herself. She even once asked her boyfriend to draw a blade along her jaw line - and still has a faint scar to mark the occasion.

At the age of 16, Angelina split up with her punk rocker boyfriend, and decided to revive her childhood dreams of becoming an actress. She moved into an apartment opposite her mother, and secured her first on-stage role, as a German S&M dominatrix! For the first time ever, she also began to make the peace with her father.
She realised that when it came to acting, he had a great deal to teach her. With her braces and glasses gone, she even succeeded in landing work as a model, and even appeared in the video for Meat Loaf’s 'Rock’n’Roll Dreams Come Through'. She also appeared in promo videos for Lenny Kravitz and the Rolling Stones.
